2025 was the first year in the period when used cars outnumbered new ones. Brand-new car registrations fell by 14.9%, from 7,683 in 2024, while used registrations rose from 7,388 to 7,567.

The claim is therefore accurate when referring specifically to brand-new cars, but not to all cars registered for the first time in Malta.

Editorial note

How we assessed this claim

We read "new cars" as brand-new passenger cars, the NSO's category of newly licensed 'new' vehicles, and used the NSO's quarterly motor vehicles release covering the whole of 2025.

Limitations

  • The claim is accurate for brand-new cars, but not for all cars registered for the first time in Malta, which include used imports.
